You may have heard the buzz that probiotics are the next big thing in skincare, and, if you’re like me, you’re intrigued. I associate probiotics with healthy digestion (also manifested in healthy skin), so this sounds like a win-win combo. But I was still a little (read: very) unclear on what probiotics actually do for skin. I went to Nude skincare, one of the first brands to offer probiotic beauty products, for some answers. Turns out that topical probiotics keep skin’s natural protective barrier in balance, rather than stripping beneficial oils and bacteria each time you cleanse or moisturize. This translates to increased protection against environmental stresses and an ideal environment for the skin’s microflora, which maintains hydration and even wards off bad bacteria that could cause a host of skin problems like acne, eczema or rosacea. In short, probiotics support, rather than interfere with, skin’s natural defensive abilities. Probiotics also reduce inflammation, which goes a long way toward preventing wrinkles! Stay tuned for more probiotic beauty products that are sure to enter the market in the coming months. If you’re curious now, give Nude a try. My favorites are the line’s Hydrating and Clarifying waters (lightly fragrant and so refreshing) and Smoothing Body Refiner (probiotics for the whole body!). Writer :: Jolene Hart

I also am aware of the benefits of probiotics for digestive, and even immune, health—but, as for skin, I was foggy. It’s great that a topical application of probiotics can help balance natural, beneficial bacteria and oils in the skin. But, as someone who regularly takes a probiotic supplement, can’t I get these types of benefits from the inside out?

I found an product called SK1N Probiotics online at http://www.sk1nprobiotics.com. I had seen the products before at the beauty supply store in town but didnt really have time to read about them. After doing my research I went back into the store and bought the product. I cant believe how wonderful the cleanser is! I used it directly on my face to remove my makeup and then add water and it foams up for a great body wash. Every other cleanser or make up remover I have used always felt like it left an oily residue. SK1N has no parabans, no propylene glycol and it doesnt smell. The Sk1n Serum is my favorite product but I use the whole line. My skin has NEVER looked better and I swear my make up goes on really evenly for the first time in years– better yet is that now I only wear makeup when I go out for the evening but my skin looks so great now that I dont even wear it during the day. Go out and try SK1N, you wont be disappointed- Ive got all 3 of my sisters hooked on SK1N too!
Comment by Dana February 20, 2009 @ 8:56 pmAnna M, I don’t see why what we ingest wouldn’t be just as effective as something applied topically. The jury is still out as to whether probiotics for the skin actually have the same affect on the body as they do when taken internally. Until that’s proven, I’m sticking to my probiotic yoghurt!
Comment by Emma Pezzack February 20, 2009 @ 11:28 pmI have been taking probiotics internally for over ten years now, but have never used it topically for my skin. Very curious thought! I will try that. You have me curious now with the wonderment of what my skin might have been like now without the previous years of probiotics. I can tell I have aged.
