California Leads The Way :: A Less Toxic Future For Beauty.

Amidst much debate and scepticism from all sides over the latest green chemistry legislation, Arnold Schwarzenegger has vowed to remove politics from the evaluation of disputed chemicals in our personal care products. Having introduced two new bills that effectively prevent lobby groups and political or self-interests from dominating research, he’s handed over scientific control to the CA Dept For Toxic Substances Control. Charged with ensuring they act in the best interests of consumers, they’re not just identifying (once and for all one would hope) ingredients that are suspect, they’re developing a new science-based code to track, analyze and evaluate alternatives. Added to that will be a new database that clearly identifies and describes for consumers what to look out for, what’s truly safe and what’s not. Signing the bills in LA this week, Schwarzenneger stated, “Instead of looking at toxics as an inevitable byproduct of industrial production, they will be something that can be removed at the design stage – protecting people’s health and the environment.”

As always the bill is not without its critics but my personal opinion is that this is a big fat step in the right direction toward regulating an industry that desperately needs sensible oversight – without the heavy handed control or sensationalism that’s been perpetuated to date.
